Hendricks’ best-known figurative painting evokes power through its intensity of color. For the Visions bust, Hendricks underscores this motif using a saturated palette of black, red and green— contrasted with the absence of color, white. Through Hendricks’ color scheme, President Obama is depicted as the embodiment of the people, the coming together of black and white and ultimately as a symbol of unification.
Born in Philadelphia, Barkley Hendricks studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and graduated with a BFA and MFA in painting and photography from Yale.
He has exhibited widely and his works are held in major museum collections. The recipient of many awards and fellowships, he is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Connecticut College in New London.
