“The ruler of any country must put on many faces to appeal to the masses. I wanted to explore the idea of concealment for self-preservation. As a result, my bust is a conglomeration of inspirations arising from popular and hip-hop culture, racial discrimination, body modification, text, color theory and symbolism.”

Nina Chanel Abney was included in the Rubell Family Collection’s prestigious 30 Americans show, featuring pieces by important black artists, on view at Art Basel in Miami Beach.

Her paintings consist of strong feminine and masculine images infused with humor, irony, perversity, satire and fantasy. Nina’s painting, Forbidden Fruit, is on display in the Brooklyn Museum.
