“A wise man once said the only thing we own is what we know. The question is do we have the courage to speak up to an injustice that tries to own us? The perspective I used when doing this sculpture was to keep this as a history lesson. I wanted to see how many people you could recognize and how they were significant in building the conscience that exists in these United States. And if you look real close you should see yourself among them.”
Paul Goodnight has developed his aesthetic philosophy to document the humanity of black people around the world. He often incorporates African themes and symbols to provide depths of history and culture.
Goodnight has traveled extensively, living among the people of Russia, China, Haiti, Nicaragua and Brazil.
