"My mother once told me that sometimes she felt like she ‘didn’t have no life.’ That statement has profoundly influenced the philosophy of my art. In the early 1900s, when she grew up, life was a day-to-day struggle filled with the perils of discrimination and poverty. She survived and passed her legacy on to her children. My work is founded in that legacy.”
Tyrone Geter was born in Anniston, Alabama. He received a Masters of Fine Art from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio where he majored in painting.
Geter has taught at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria and the University of Akron’s School of Art.
He is currently teaching at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.
